L'Aquila Earthquake, 2009
The L'Aquila Earthquake of 2009 struck on the 6 of April in 2009 at 3.32am local time, in the region of Abruzzo. The earthquake reached 6.3 on the Richter Scale in the epicentre, L'Aquila and it reached a depth of 6.2 miles (10km), causing major devastation throughout the city and region culturally, environmentally and economically. After the devastating few seconds of the main earthquake three large after shocks followed. L'Aquila is located in southern Italy and is the capital of the region of Abruzzo. L'Aquila had a population of approximately 72 913 in May of 2008 and earthquakes mark the history of the city. Before the earthquake in 2009 the largest recorded earthquake in the region was in 1997 which measured 6.0 on the Richter Scale.
